Youth Basketball

The goal of the league and Sports Ministry as a whole, is to bring Orthodox Christian athletes closer to Christ by providing a mature, safe, moral, and sportsmanlike environment in which a healthy level of athletic competition can be enjoyed.  Our parish Basketball program is divided into three groups:

Boys GOYA Basketball has been very active since the foundation of the St. Athanasius Parish.  Each year we get between 14-18 players on the roster.  The GOYA age range is 13-18 years of age.  College students are not eligible.  All players must be baptized Orthodox Christians, and actively participate in GOYA events as well as attend church on Sundays.  Practice takes place each Friday from October to April, 5-7 pm at the Ottoson Middle School in Arlington.  There are usually 16 regular season Metropolis league games and 2-5 playoff games. Additionally we have participated in the Metropolis' January tournament and the Harry Agganis tournament in Lynn.  Other fun events include the annual trip to a Celtics game (which is always well attended!!) and trips to one or two local College games at BC or Bentley College.

All players must be  present and dressed for 60% of regular season games in order to be eligible for playoffs.  To be eligible to play in a game, a player should attend Church, Sunday Church School, and Divine Liturgy the Sunday before their respective game.  The season will culminate with a Tournament and a banquet with all the parishes in the Metropolis.
